Transparency, ease of navigation and ample lighting have transformed Philadelphia’s 5th Street subway station. Used by more international tourists than any other station, 5th Street is designed to be a showpiece for the City’s transit system. Above ground, travelers follow translucent daylight sidewalk pavers to new glass headhouses on the northwest and southwest corners of 5th and Market. Refurbished stairs open onto a bright, spacious platform with new circulation kiosks in white and red herringbone tile. Glass partitions separate the circulation area from the track, enhancing security, orientation and sight-lines for the painted murals. Original arches in the vaulted ceiling have been exposed and made water-tight, and existing light fixtures were retrofitted with efficient and modern LEDs.
