Named for the acclaimed Shakespearean actor who lived nearby, the Edwin Forrest Elementary School has served the Holmesburg community since 1929. To accommodate growing enrollment, CWA designed a single-story school building specifically for kindergarten through second grade, containing thirteen classrooms and a multi-purpose room that serves as a cafeteria, assembly room and gym. Separated from the original school building by a playground, the K-2 facility is clad in a mix of colors that echo the yellow brick of the school and the red brick of neighboring residences. Classrooms are identified on the exterior with house-like gable roofs and dormer windows in geometric shapes that allow children to identify their classrooms from the street. Ample natural light, high ceilings and playful elements provide a comfortable, inspiring space for learning.
